TOURNAMENT REPORTS
A highly competitive Brentwood Table Tennis League Annual Individual Tournament took place on Sunday 17th April 2011 at the Trinity School, Brizes Park, Kelvedon Hatch with some extremely good performances but none better than a third successive triumph in the Open Singles for Number One seed Chris Knight who defeated the unseeded Andrew Halling in three ends. Knight had come through the rounds with wins over Trevor Carter in the Quarter Final and Keith Phillips in the Semi Final – where he recovered from a 2 – 1 deficit to win in five ends – Phillips having defeated the third seed Kevin Worthington in the Quarter Final. Meanwhile Halling was making steady progress and claimed a fine victory over Hamish Innes in the Second Round in five ends – then made further progress by defeating Keith Adams in the Quarter Final – Adams having knocked out fourth seed Jon Stokes - Halling then came up against the runner up for the past three seasons and Number Two seed Paul Cuming in the Semi Final – Halling getting the better of Cuming in three ends to set up the Knight versus Halling final. Chris Knight’s win gave him a most successful season having won the Premier Division League title, plus the Premier Division Knock Out Cup Final and the Handicap Cup Final with his team BAE Selex “A” – Chris also went through the season undefeated in 38 games for a 100% average.
Andrew Halling (-13) made certain of at least one trophy when he overcame the odds in the Open Handicap event which he won in two ends over Trevor Carter (-13) – both players with similar handicaps starting from scratch and playing to 21. In this event Halling picked up wins over Jon Stokes (-16) and Kevin Worthington (-18).
The Open Doubles Final added another new inscription on the cup with Hamish Innes and Keith Phillips defeating Paul Cuming and Kevin Worthington in four ends – the winners putting out last years victorious pairing of Paul Stephens and Jon Stokes in the Semi Final and the losers enjoying a win over Keith Adams and Andrew Halling also in the Semi Final. Fast attacking table tennis of the highest quality was the order of the day in these doubles matches.
The fourth event which took place was the Restricted event for First and Second Division players which saw Pat White of Billericay Sports up against Mathew Brown of Writtle Table Tennis Club who has topped the averages in the First Division. A close encounter culminated in a three end win for Brown
