Week Commencing Monday 30th January 2012

Continuing on in their unbeaten way are Selex "A" who are almost guaranteed to win their fourth successive Premier Division title. Their latest match at home to Billericay Sports "A" ended in an 8 - 2 win for Selex - Paul Sayer and Chris Knight were unbeaten with Paul Stephens being denied his maximum by Andrew Halling who got home in four ends - Keith Adams and Keith Phillips scoreless. The visitors second point came in a doubles win in four. Three of the ties went to a fifth end with Selex taking all three - Adams unable to close down Knight having won the first two ends and Phillips also losing a slender lead over Sayer to lose in five.

A 6 - 4 home win for Billericay Sports "B" over Writtle "A" in a match where players cancelled each other - four players winning two ties each.  Keith Ashton, Marilyn Bawden and Mike Johnston all won twice for Sports - Bawden lost to Frank Neill and Ashton and Johnston were beaten by Hector Rogers who himself was denied his maximum by Bawden - the doubles win secured another point for the visitors.

Week Commencing Monday 23rd January 2012

Kevin Worthington turned in a match winning performance for Billericay "A" in their home fixture with their Billericay "B" team - Worthington was unbeaten and supported by Dave Carter and Stephen Northcott with two wins each - both beaten by John Holland who scored the visitors two points with both Paul Mulley and Guy McKenzie pointless in an 8 - 2 win for Billericay "A".

Paul Sayer picked up another maximum in a 7 - 3 away win for Selex "A" against Brentwood "A" beating Paul Cuming, Trevor Carter and Peter Hayden all in three ends - star player for Brentwood  Cuming (2 wins) denied Chris Knight his seventh maximum with a four end win in the final singles of the night  and Jon Stokes (1 win) defeated Peter Hayden for the second time this season - Stokes losing the first two ends but coming good in the final three. Brentwood's third man Trevor Carter picked up one win with Hayden unable to score.

Billericay Sports "A" entertained Cranston Park who could only field two players and the home side of Keith Adams, Keith Phillips and Andrew Halling proved far too strong for Terry Timms and John Mansfield and recorded a 10 - 0 home win. Closest call of the match Timms versus Phillips with the visitor going two ends up but losing the final three.

St. Josephs were at home to Billericay Sports "B" and could collect only one point in a 1 - 9 defeat against Glenn Johnson, Mike Johnston and Keith Ashton - the last named losing to Lindsey Phelps for the St. Josephs point - Sue Hickman and Gary Carr unable to score.

Week Commencing Monday 16th January 2012

Selex "A" continued on their winning ways to a fourth Championship title with a 7 - 3 home win over Billericay "A" - Paul Sayer was unbeaten with Paul Stephens winning twice and Jon Stokes collecting one win - for the home side Kevin Worthington was their best player with two wins with Dave Carter taking one point - Billericay's third player John Gagg pointless.

John Holland led the way for Billericay "B" in their home match against Writtle "A" and turned in an unbeaten performance by taking his three singles in three ends, he was well supported by Steve Muth and John Webber who both collected two wins but losing to Writtle's best player Matthew Brown - both Brian Cook and Martin Goddard found their opponents difficult to overcome and failed to score in an 8 - 2 victory for Billericay "B".

Cranston Park entertained Brentwood "A" and recorded a 6 - 4 home win and had a maximum from Paul Morris to thank for half of their points - John Mansfield added two more and then combined with Morris to pick up the doubles point and earn only their second win of the season - Ev Lucas their third player against Trevor Carter (two wins), Phil Purser and Bob Garson with one win each.

A local "derby" match between Billericay Sports "B" and their "A" team resulted in a 7 - 3 win for the "A" side of Keith Adams (unbeaten), Bruce Kettle and Dave Calleja (both two wins). The "B" side of Debbie Auvache and Glenn Johnson picked up two singles wins with Brian Adams pointless - Auvache/Johnson beating Adams/Kettle in the doubles for a third point.

Paul Cuming turned in an unbeaten performance in a re-arranged home match with Cranston Park - the result a 5 - 5 draw with Bob Garson who was playing up from the First Division picking up two excellent victories over John Mansfield in four and Terry Timms in three - the visitors third player Paul Morris returning to the Brentwood League after a 30 year absence claimed two victories which resulted in the luckless Trevor Carter collecting "in his own words a DUCK"

Week Commencing Monday 19th December

Only one match card received for this final period before Christmas - Billericay "B" needing a final doubles win to ensure they picked up a 5 - 5 draw against St. Josephs.  The visitors enjoyed the services of their star player for the fourth time this season and he duly obliged with a vintage performance - winning all three ties comfortably and dropping only thirty three points in the process - Hamish Innes and Gary Carr each claimed a win over Paul Mulley while Steve Muth and Neil Freeman won two ties each plus the doubles to claim all five points for St. Josephs.

Week Commencing Monday 5th December

Selex "A" travelled to Ramsden Heath for their away match with Billericay "B" and were rarely troubled in a 10 - 0 away win for Paul Sayer, Paul Stephens and Chris Knight  over John Webber, Gary Ward and Neil Freeman - the first eight ties all being taken in three ends by the visitors  with Webber taking one end from Sayer in the final singles. The doubles extended the evening as it went to five ends to complete the clean sweep for Selex "A".

Writtle "A" faced a daunting task in their home match with St. Josephs "A" as the visitors included Alex Abbott, Hamish Innes and Lindsey Phelps in their line up and it was no surprise that the visitors picked up an 8 - 2 away win over Hector Rogers, Dave Moles and Frank Neill.  Rogers and Neill defeated Phelps but Lindsey could point to an excellent four end win in her first singles over Moles to gain her side another  point - Abbott and Innes being rarely troubled and unbeaten.

John Mansfield, Ev Lucas and Terry Timms held a 5 - 3 lead over their opponents Billericay "A" but were unable to pick up the vital point to give them victory - final score 5 - 5.  For Cranston Park Timms enjoyed an excellent five end win over Kevin Worthington and had beaten John Parodi in his first singles but lost his maximum by falling to John Gagg - Lucas defeated Parodi and Gagg with Mansfield collecting a win over Gagg in five in the first singles of the match.

A 6 - 4 home win for Billericay Sports "B" over Brentwood "A" keeps the home side in third place in the table - no player could remain undefeated with Marilyn Bawden defeating Phil Purser (1 win) and Bob Garson (1 win), Glenn Johnson also won twice defeating Trevor Carter (2 wins) and Garson but losing to Purser.  The Sports third player Keith Ashton picked up one win by defeating Purser.

Week Commencing Monday 28th November

Writtle "A" were in a determined mood in their home match with Brentwood "A" and led 5 - 4 with the doubles to follow - won by Brentwood 11/7, 9/11, 11/7, 8/11, 11/9 to ensure a 5 - 5 draw mainly due to an excellent three wins for Paul Cuming dropping only 18 points to Dave Moles, 17 to Brian Cook and 14 to Matthew Brown - Phil Purser supported with one win over Moles but Brentwood's third man Trevor Carter lost to both Moles and Cook in five and was unable to put any points on the board.

Almost seemed an inevitable conclusion but Billericay Sports "B" were soundly beaten by Selex "A" 10 - 0 with Paul Sayer, Paul Stephens and Chris Knight on top form although Stephens needed five ends to defeat Mike Johnston who took the first two ends and then another five ends to dispose of Marilyn Bawden with third man Keith Ashton losing his three in quick time.

Week Commencing Monday 21st November

Unbeaten performance from Steve Muth in a home win for Billericay "B" over Cranston Park with contributions from Gary Ward (2 wins) and John Webber one win - for the visitors John Mansfield collected two wins and Terry Timms one win with Ev Lucas taking Muth to five ends but unable to score in a 7 - 3 home win for Billericay "B".

St. Josephs entertained high flying Billericay Sports "A" with Hamish Innes, Sue Hickman and Gary Carr up against Keith Adams, Keith Phillips and Dave Calleja - the score 8 - 2 in favour of Sports "A" saw Calleja collect an excellent maximum which included a five end win over Innes to deny the home player his maximum - Hickman and Carr pointless.

Billericay Sports "A" had, a week earlier collected a 6 - 4 home win over Brentwood "A" with all three of their players picking up two wins each - Keith Adams, Babul MacLeod and Bruce Kettle all being denied their maximums by a fine unbeaten performance from Paul Cuming who then paired with Trevor Carter to pick up the doubles point against Adams & MacLeod.

Week Commencing Monday 7th November

Gary Ward was in superlative form for Billericay "B" in their home match against Billericay Sports "B" - his three wins (all in five ends) over Brian Adams, Glenn Johnson and Mike Johnston saw him at his very best - 11/7 in the final end against Johnston, 11/9 final end over Johnson and 11/6 final end over Adams - his three successes were the only points that the home side could muster in a 3 - 7 defeat despite efforts from John Webber and Paul Mulley.

Week Commencing Monday 31st October

Billericay "A" featured in two close games in the space of six days - losing both but picking up a valuable eight points in the process.  Away at Brentwood "A" they came up against Peter Hayden, Trevor Carter and Phil Purser and at one stage were level at 4 - 4 but with Hayden beating John Parodi (1 win) in the final singles it was left to Hayden & Carter to collect the win via a doubles victory over Steve Northcott (1 win) and Kevin Worthington (2 wins) - Carter perhaps a shade unfortunate to lose to the last named two in the singles as he held a 2 - 1 lead in both games but failed in five.   The next Billericay "A" match was a home contest against Billericay Sports "B" in which they introduced John Gagg and Peter Brownlow to accompany John Parodi - the match was another defeat for the home team despite a fine all round performance from Gagg who was unbeaten - going to five against Keith Ashton who held a 2 - 1 lead at one stage and beating both Marilyn Bawden and Debbie Auvache - Brownlow picked up one point with a win over Bawden but Parodi was unable to add any points to his side's total of four - the doubles point going to the visitors.

Paul Stephens and Paul Sayer were unbeaten against Cranston Park with Jon Stokes winning twice - his loss coming against Terry Timms in five in one of the only two games that went past three ends - John Mansfield and Tony Bonnici found the champions in good form and were unable to trouble the home players to any great extent.  Selex "A" winning the match 9 - 1.

Billericay Sports "A" of Keith Adams, Bruce Kettle and Dave Calleja were far too strong for their visitors Writtle "A" and were comfortable winners 9 - 1 with Calleja losing out to Matthew Brown in four ends for Writtle's only point - both Ian Hockley and Frank Neill were unable to force any of their ties to a fifth end although seven of the games went to four ends.

Week Commencing Monday 24th October

From all accounts the home fixture of Billericay Sports "A" versus Selex "A" rightly deserved the accolade of "Match Of The Season" as Keith Adams, Keith Phillips and Andrew Halling faced Chris Knight, Paul Sayer and Jon Stokes at Hutton Community Centre - the result to the visitors 7 - 3 but the comments by Chris Knight and Keith Adams after the match deserve to be placed on record:-  With six top class players on view the individual scores are not relevant as they all contributed to a great table tennis match with a lot of good natured banter going on and a really enjoyable contest for all concerned.

From Chris Knight - Just to say that we had a very enjoyable or should I say competitive match last night. I feel that our 7 -3 win did not do justice for the Keith's and Andrew who all really played bloody well !!
Keith Phillips always very tricky , Keith Adams has come on leaps and bounds and Andy Halling was on song with his consistent flat hitting. Very difficult indeed ! The game although competitive was played in the right spirit as well.
Please pass my comments to the guys as I really believe that they deserve a pat on the back and we now look forward.  To their visit to Selex ………..or do we

From Keith Adams - We played Selex in Brentwood and lost 7-3. But we were unlucky, lots of great games and it could have been very different. Keith Phillips was 2 - 0 and 10-6 up had six match points on Chris Knight but lost.     I was 2.1 up on Paul Sayer and lost. But just a great game overall and played in good spirit.

And this comment from Tim Pang who was playing on another table:-     We were playing on next table but all were watching the game between Adams & Knight. Plenty of great rallies but one in particular between Keith Adams  and Chris Knight, we thought we were watching finals of world championship. Brilliant!

A strong St. Josephs team entertained Cranston Park and collected a rewarding 8 - 2 win with Alex Abbott unbeaten and supported by Hamish Innes and Robbie Burton with two wins each.  Innes being beaten by Tony Bonnici in four ends and Burton being denied his maximum by Ev Lucas also in four - Mark Martin was the visitors third player and pointless.

Week Commencing Monday 17th October

Steve Northcott was undefeated in a 6 - 4 home win for Billericay "A" over Writtle "A" and was the key to victory for the home side with John Gagg defeating Brian Cook in four for his sole point of the match and John Parodi getting the better of Ian Hockley also in four for his one win - Hector Rogers was the visitors third player and collected two wins in a match that probably brought the best out of the visitors although slightly unlucky to lose the doubles in five ends as Rogers/Cook took the first two ends against Parodi/Northcott but lost the fifth end 11/13.

Another close match saw Cranston Park take a 5 - 4 lead in the singles at home to Billericay Sports "B" and then allowed the pairing of Auvache/Ashton to take the doubles against Mansfield/Lucas for a 5 - 5 draw.  John Mansfield (2 wins), Ev Lucas (2 wins) and Mark Martin (1 win) all picked up wins over Marilyn Bawden with Keith Ashton (2 wins) losing to Lucas and Debbie Auvache (2 wins) losing to Mansfield for the visitors in a tense match that ended all square.

With some results still not in Billericay Sports "A" remain at the top of the table - their latest victory at home 8 - 2 against Billericay "B" saw Keith Adams unbeaten taking his singles all in three ends and both Keith Phillips and Andrew Halling winning twice - their defeats coming at the hands of Gary Ward - the visitors remaining two players Neil Freeman and Guy McKenzie failing to score - Adams/Phillips taking the doubles in three over McKenzie/Ward.

Week Commencing Monday 3rd October

Robbie Burton of St. Josephs followed up a good performance in the Chelmsford League to again play well against Champions Selex "A" but on this occasion could only pick up one point with a four end win over Paul Stephens although Paul Sayer must have been slightly relieved to edge over the finishing line in the fifth end 11/4, 8/11, 9/11, 11/8, 11/9.  Chris Knight and Sayer were unbeaten in a 9 - 1 home win over Burton, Sue Hickman and Gary Carr.

Last season's runners up Billericay Sports "A" strengthened by the inclusion of Keith Phillips collected a comfortable 8 - 2 win away at Billericay "A" with Keith Adams and Keith Phillips unbeaten and Bruce Kettle collecting one win - for the home side Northcott and John Gagg were their points scorers with Dave Carter unable to contribute

The Cranston Park trio of Ev Lucas, John Mansfield and Tony Bonnici saw off the challenge of newly promoted Writtle "A" and were comfortable winners 9 - 1 with the only bright spot for the visitors coming with Ian Hockley's excellent four end win over Tony Bonnici - Dave Moles took Mansfield to five ends in the opening singles but from there on it was all Cranston Park.

Billericay "B" travelled to Brentwood "A" with only two players in Gary Ward and Paul Mulley and paid the penalty by losing 2 - 8 to Trevor Carter, Paul Cuming and Phil Purser with the last named losing in five to Ward despite taking a 2 - 1 lead and in four ends to Mulley who pushed both Carter and Cuming to a fifth end.

Week Commencing Monday 26th September.

A local derby between the two Billericay Sports teams resulted in a 6 - 4 away win for the "B" team over their "A" team who had Keith Adams, Keith Phillips and Chris Buer unable to fend off Brian Adams, Glenn Johnson and Marilyn Bawden.  For the victors Brian Adams remained unbeaten losing only two ends in the process - Bawden collected two wins which included a fine five end win over Phillips in which she had to come from a 2 - 1 deficit - and Johnson chipped in with a vital win over Buer who failed to score in the match - Keith Adams picking up two wins and Phillips one plus a doubles point for the pair in five ends.

Writtle "A" got their season off to a reasonable start with a 5 - 5 draw at home to Billericay "B" - all three of their players got on the score sheet with both Hector Rogers (2 wins) and Dave Moles (2 wins) winning twice - Rogers losing to Ray Eldridge and Moles to John Webber while Frank Neill (1 win) gained a useful win over Eldridge (1 win) but lost to Paul Mulley (1 win) and Webber (2 wins) - the four end doubles went to the visitors.

Week Commencing Monday 19th September.

The champions Selex "A" were at home to Brentwood "A" and gained a 7 - 3 home win but received a pleasant surprise when their opponents paraded their new signing - previously unpublicized - Peter Hayden was returning to the Brentwood League after a gap of some 21 years and playing against former team mates at the old Brentwood venue in Sawyers Hall Lane. Peter last success in the league came in a doubles win with brother Ian in season 1990/1 - he had also been Men's Singles Champion back in the early 1980's.  With two talented teams - Chris Knight (3 wins), Paul Stephens (2 wins) and Jon Stokes (2 wins) on one side and Peter Hayden (1 win), Paul Cuming (1 win) and Trevor Carter (a duck) on the other a match of quality was to be expected.  Carter's report however gave a different view in that it had turned out to be the biggest anti climax of any match he had played in since 1971.  The element of surprise only served to provoke the best out of the home side as they quickly ran into a 7 - 1 lead before taking their foot off the pedal to lose the final two ties.  Stokes played a significant part in Brentwood's demise, coming back from losing the first two ends against Carter and then overcoming huge deficits in the 3rd and 4th ends before sailing home easily in the 5th - Stokes by now  at the top of his game later recorded a five end win over Hayden (only Stokes second ever career win over Hayden in 25 years).  Stephens success over a stuttering Cuming was just as significant but Knight was the only player who emerged fully intact - battling back from two ends to one down to fend off Hayden in five.  Selex "A" look to have one hand on the title already.

Billericay Sports "B" with Marilyn Bawden, Keith Ashton and Mike Johnston on call found themselves facing a new look St. Joseph's who included their two new signings for the first time.  The highly rated Alex Abbott - current Southend Men's and Veterans Champion Alex Abbott along with former Hutton star Hamish Innes were far too good for the home players and picked up all seven points in a 7 - 3 away win - Gary Carr taking Ashton to five ends in the opener but otherwise all ties were completed in quick time.

An excellent start for Billericay Sports "A" with a 10 - 0 away win at Cranston Park thanks to good performances from Bruce Kettle, Dave Calleja and Andrew Halling against Ev Lucas, John Mansfield and Tony Bonnici - none of the ties went to a deciding fifth end with only three ends lost in singles in the match.

Two more unbeaten players featured in a local "derby" at Billericay with the "B" side of Steve Muth, Ray Eldridge and Gary Ward entertaining Peter Barrett, Kevin Worthington and John Parodi with both Barrett and Worthington unbeaten - all three of the "B" team defeated the pointless Parodi.
