HANDICAP CUP QUARTER FINALS

Week Commencing 9th January 2012

Billericay Sports "C"   3  -  5   Billericay Sports "B"

Chris Crooks (-6), Dave Kirston (-4) and Pat White (-6) of Billericay Sports "C" put up a brave fight against their Premier

Division club mates Billericay Sports "B" with Marilyn Bawden (-11), Mike Johnston (-12) and Keith Ashton (-9) the

match going to the eighth singles before the "B" team crossed the winning line.  A terrific effort against Johnston by Kirston

in this tie almost took the scores level with one to go but Johnston just edged the third end with Kirston just getting pipped

on the line 21/12, 20/22, 19/21 _ Kirston having earlier beaten Ashton but losing to Bawden.  Johnston was unbeaten

with three wins with Ashton and Bawden contributing the other two vital wins. White collecting two wins and Kirston one.

Final score 5 - 3 to Billericay Sports "B" 5 - 3.

St. Josephs "A"   1  -  5   Billericay "A"

St. Josephs could only field two players in their match and suffered an early defeat at  the hands of Steve Northcott (-12),

John Gagg (-9) and Dave Carter (-9) - consequently only three ties were played - Sue Hickman (-8) losing to Gagg and

Northcott with Lindsey Phelps (-4) defeating Carter. Final score 5 - 1 to Billericay "A"

Billericay "D"   4  -  5   Buttsbury "A"

Undoubtedly the tie of the round with the home side Billericay "D"sporting Jon Fieldsend (-7), Gareth Davies (-6)

and Keith Cullen (-5) against a  "A" team of Paul Sturton (-5), Rod Maclennan (-5) and Caroline Cole (-2).

The match began brilliantly for Billericay as they stormed into a 3 - 0 lead - Fieldsend beating Maclennan in three -

Cullen defeating Sturton in two and Davies beating Cole in three.  Fortunes turned completely round as Buttsbury took

command and won the next four singles to take the lead only to see possible victory slip from their grasp with Davies

beating Maclennan in two to force the tie to a decider Fieldsend against Sturton.  The visitor picking up a two end win

to take Buttsbury into the Semi Final with a fine 5 - 4 win.

Billericay Sports "E"   2  -  5   Mountnessing "A"

An away win for Mountnessing "A" at Billericay Sports "E", taking them to the Semi Finals.  The home side fielded

Richard Hayhoe (0), Wally Sale (+1) and Ron Milbourn (+8) against the visiting trio of Gordon Gatheral (-7),

Dave Finlayson (-6) and Jon Dyson (-4).  After the first four games, the match was poised at 2-2

(Hayhoe and Milbourn both beating Finlayson in two ends for the home team and Dyson beating Sale in two, with

Gatheral beating Milbourn in three for the visitors).  The fifth game of Hayhoe vs Dyson, which was an exciting game of attack

and counter attack from both players, saw Dyson winning 22-20 in the third end.  The first division away side then asserted their

strength and experience against the second division home side, taking the next two games to attain victory.

Draw for Second Round week commencing 14th November 2011

With six of the eight Handicap Cup results in to date - five of them were away wins with the solitary home win being a notable victory for Billericay Sports "B" over last seasons Handicap Cup champions Selex "A" -= two other Sports teams "C" and "E" moved into the last eight with another team "F" result pending.  Billericay also have two teams through to the next round "A" and "D" making progress by defeating their "B" and "C" teams.                 Billericay "A" of Kevin Worthington (-23), John Gagg (-9) and John Parodi (-7) made it to the last eight by defeating Billericay "B" 5 - 2 but with the score at 3 - 2 to the "A" team -  Freeman (-6) was forced to forfeit his other two games which effectively ended the match for John Webber (-13) and Guy McKenzie (-2) of the "B" team.                       A second match at Ramsden Heath saw the Billericay "C" team of Stan Dyson (-8). Brian Farmer (-6) and Adrian Atkinson (-6) lose out to their Billericay "D" team 2 - 5 with Keith Cullen (-5) unbeaten, Jon Fieldsend (-7) winning twice and Gareth Davies (-6) unable to score but with Cullen on such good form the home team were second best.                              Brentwood "B" joined the losers on the night when Buttsbury "A" came and took a 5 - 2 away win over Bob Garson (-6), Brian Steward (-5) and Mary Nicholls (-4) - the visitors fielded Paul Sturton (-5), Caroline Cole (-2) and Tony Nettleingham (Scr) - both Sturton (3 wins) and Sturton (2 wins) were unbeaten and worthy winners.                            The fourth 5 - 2 away win came for Billericay Sports "E" away at Mountnessing "C" with only one of the ties going to a third end - the home side fielded Bruno Handel (+2), Paul Singleton (+3) and Alan Hart (+11) but the visitors trio of Richard Hayhoe (Scr), Wally Sale (+1) and Ron Milbourn (+8) took the spoils with both Hayhoe and Sale unbeaten.                                    Selex "B" entertained Billericay Sports "C" and having won the recent League match against their opponents must have fancied their chances but the handicaps came to the benefit of Sports "C" with Paul Brown (-15), Garry Hartgrove (-8) and Trevor Ward (-4) facing Lin Attridge (-6), Pat White (-6) and Chris Crooks (-6) - the visitors took  control from the opening and charged to a 5 m- 1 victory with Ward beating Attridge for the home side's only success.            But the match of the round was in no doubt the fixture which saw Selex "A" with Paul Sayer (-24), Paul Stephens (-21) and Jon Stokes (-22) up against Mike Johnston (-12), Marilyn Bawden (-11) and Debbie Auvache (-7).   With the score standing at 3 - 3 - Bawden defeated Stokes to set up the final two ties with Auvache following on against Stephens.  With two players intent on taking the offensive the match was full of attack and counter attack and Auvache took the first end - lost the second end and with both players throwing caution to the wind Stephens gradually hauled back most of the 14 point start he had to give his opponent - falling at the final hurdle to give the home side victory with Auvache unbeaten and Johnston and Bawden picking up a win each.   Stephen's comments after the game was "that he felt he had been run over by a train" the action was so intense and exhausting with Auvache enjoying what she called a "brilliant match".

The Brentwood and District Table Tennis League began its new 2011/2012 Season with matches in the Handicap Cup.

Paul Sturton (-5) and Rod MacLennan (-5) with two wins each from two played and Caroline Cole (-2) with one from three played just edged out their opponents Brentwood "C" with John Benson (Scr), John White (+2) and Chris Hills (+7) picking up two wins but failing in three other ties that went to a third end and all to Buttsbury - an unfortunate night for the visitors with a final score of 5 - 2 to Buttsbury.    Another Buttsbury team the "C" of Graham Sturton (-2), Andrew Pepper (+8) and Louis Brown (+8) just failed to master a strong Brentwood "B" team of Bob Garson (-6), Brian Steward (-5) and Mary Nicholls (-4) and fell at the final tie with Garson just edging out Sturton 21/18, 22/20 for a 5 - 4 win for Brentwood.  Both Brown and Pepper defeating Nicholls and Sturton recoprding two wins.              Billericay Sports "D" took the first two ends in their encounter with Selex "B" with Mike Joslin (-6) beating Alby Warner (-5) followed by Brian Wellman (-2) edging out Gary Hartgrove (-8) in three ends but their resistance failed with Trevor Ward (-4) collecting three wins with his side recovering from 2 down to win 5 - 2.

Alan Tofts, Frances Hutt and Peter James of Brentwood "B" were no match for newly promoted to the First Division - Brentwood Hard - who took the first four ends thanks to winning positions from Greg Cooper, Nick Wright and John Barns - Tofts beating Barns to keep Buttsbury in the hunt but Cooper defeated Hutt to ensure a 5 - 1 win for the visitors.

Top result in the weeks matches came at Tipps Cross with First Division Mountnessing "A" making their handicaps count against a strong Brentwood "A" team of Paul Cuming (-22), Trevor Carter (-11) and Phil Purser (-11).  The visitors fielded Gordon Gatheral (-7), Dave Finlayson (-6) and Jon Dyson (-4) and took an early 2 - 0 lead with wins for Finlayson over Cuming and Gatheral over Purser - Carter pulled one back against Dyson for the home side but fell further behind when Purser lost to Finlayson. Brentwood's second win came when Cuming defeated Dyson in three but the visitors claimed the next two games to record a creditable victory 5 - 2.     Steve Murdoch (+3 and 3 wins) and Voltaire Salvador (-1 and 2 wins) were undefeated for Billericay Sports "F" against St. Josephs Hutton and recorded a 5 - 3 win - Tony Adams their third player against Roy Barnes (-4), David Barnes (Scr) and Ron Grief (+5).            A super 5 - 1 away win for Mountnessing "C" at Writtle "B" thanks to Bruno Handel ( +2 and 2 wins from 2), Suzanne Shaw ( +9 and 2 wins from 2) and Paul Singleton (+3 and 1 win from 2) over a home team of Anne Lockhart (+2), Kevin Barber (+2) and Martin Goddard (+2) - Barber picking up the solitary win for Writtle.       Two Premier Division teams met at Ramsden Heath with Billericay "A" - John Gagg(-9), Dave Carter (-9) and John Parodi (-7) too good for Writtle "A" of Matthew Brown (-11), Hector Rogers (-10) and Ian Hockley (-7) - result 5 - 1 to the home side with Carter and Parodi unbeaten in two played and Rogers picking up a solitary win over Gagg for the visitors.        A nailbiting finish in the remaining match - a home fixture for Billericay Sports "E" against Mountnessing "B" - the home side fell 3 - 0 behind with Richard Hayhoe (Scr) losing to Len Jupe (+3), Mike Newman (+2) losing to John Newman (+1) and Wally Sale (+1) losing to Claire Abraham (+3) - but a half time pep talk produced the required effect with Mike Newman defeating Jupe in three followed by Hayhoe defeating Abraham - John Newman then picked up the visitors fourth win by defeating Sale but the home side rallied again to win the last three ties - Mike Newman over Abraham, Sale over Jupe and finally Hayhoe over John Newman in three ends for a satisfying 5 - 4 win for Billericay Sports "E".
