Season

2011-2012

BRENTWOOD & DISTRICT TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE

2011 - 2012

FIRST DIVISION REPORTS

GO TO RESULTS - GO TO TABLES

Week Commencing Monday 30th January 2012

Top of the table clash saw Billericay Sports "C" reverse the result of the season's earlier meeting with Selex "B" and record a 6 - 4 home win - Chris Buer was the star man of the match and remained unbeaten against Chris Aukett (1 win), Trevor Ward (1 win) and Paul Brown (2 wins) - the victory was achieved with a doubles win for Buer and Lin Attridge  against Aukett and Brown with the winners coming from an end down to narrowly take the fifth end 12/10 despite holding what seemed to be comfortable leads. Chris Crooks picked up one win over Ward with Attridge beating Aukett. The defeat for Selex saw them lose their 100% winning record and also saw Aukett lose his unbeaten 100% start to the season having recorded 5 maximums.

Mountnessing "A" continued their quest for promotion by picking up an 8 - 2 away win at Billericay "C" - Gordon Gatheral was unbeaten with Dave Finlayson and Mick Morris winning two each - for the losers Stan Dyson picked up a win over Morris and Brian Farmer defeating Finlayson - Keith Cullen being unable to score.

Another team to pick up an away win were Buttsbury "A" who completed a 7 - 3 win over Brentwood Hard - in this contest four players all picked up two wins with none able to convert to a maximum - Nick Wright defeated both Caroline Cole (2 wins)and Rod MacLennan (2 wins) for his two wins while Greg Cooper  defeated Paul Sturton (2 wins) for his point - John Barns unable to score. A doubles win for Buttsbury took their tally to seven points for the match.

Two matches for Brentwood "B" saw them lose cat Selex "B" 1 - 9 and win at home to Billericay "D". Trevor Ward, Paul Brown and Chris Aukett of Selex were far too strong for Brian Steward, Dave Parker and Colin Griffiths with Parker's win over Ward in the first singles the only consolation of the match for the visitors.    Brentwood's 6 - 4 home win came with Bob Garson in the side and completing a welcome maximum, Colin Griffiths winning twice and Brian Steward once over a Billericay "D" team of Jon Fieldsend (2 wins), Alan Wood (1 win) and Keith Cullen without troubling the scorers

Week Commencing Monday 23rd January 2012

The week started well for Mountnessing "A" who recorded a 10 - 0 home win over Writtle "B" - Mick Morris, Steve Nicholls and Dave Finlayson rattled the ties off against Anne Lockhart, Wendy Hibbett and Martin Goddard with the visitors picking up a solitary end in their struggle for points at the bottom.

Billericay Sports "D" enjoyed an 8 - 2 home win over Brentwood Hard who arrived with only two players Greg Cooper and Nick Wright - Cooper collecting two wins over Brian Cole and Brian Wellman but losing to Malcolm Henstock - all three home players defeating Wright who put up stern resistance but just failed to record any wins.

Billericay Sports "C" kept up their title hopes with a 7 - 3 away win at Buttsbury "A" - Steve Buer and Lin Attridge were in good form and both were unbeaten - Attridge losing the first two ends against Paul Sturton but just squeezing home 13/11 in the fifth end - Rod MacLennan, Caroline Cole and Sturton defeating Dave Kirston for Butts Bury's points.

A week earlier Buttsbury "A" had travelled to Brentwood "A" and picked up a useful 5 - 5 draw - unable to call on their usual three Buttsbury called up Andrew Pepper and Graham Sturton from the 2nd Division with Graham claiming two wins - Pepper failing to score but Paul Sturton was in good form for Buttsbury and recorded a maximum over Bob Garson (2 wins), Mary Nicholls (1 win) and Dave Parker (1 win).

Billericay "C" entertained their Billericay "D" club mates with the final result a 5 - 5 draw but the "C" team found themselves 5 - 3 down at one stage and rallied to take the final two ties - Stan Dyson over Keith Cullen and then Dyson & Anthon Ranjit Singh  combining to defeat Gareth Davies & Jon Fieldsend in the doubles - 12/10 in the fifth end - Dyson (2 wins), Brian Farmer and Singh (1 win each) for the "C" team and Fieldsend (unbeaten), Davies (2 wins) and Cullen pointless.

Billericay "C" had travelled to Writtle "B" a week earlier with Stan Dyson, Brian Farmer and Chudi Ukpaka up against Anne Lockhart, Kevin Barber and Martin Goddard - the visitors collecting a 9 - 1 win with the home side's point being won by Barber who produced some sound attacking play to defeat Farmer in four.

Week Commencing Monday 16th January 2012

With their nearest rivals not playing Billericay Sports "C" took full advantage in their home match against Billericay Sports "D" and picked up an 8 - 2 home win with Chris Crooks leading the way unbeaten and Robert Kemp and Steve Buer winning twice - Buer losing his 100% seasons record in the process - to Mick Joslin who claimed both points for the losers - Brian Cole and John Darling being scoreless.  Sports "C" now have a 10 point advantage over Selex "B" who have a game in hand.

Mountnessing "A" stay in the hunt for promotion and defeated Brentwood Hard at Childerditch - recording a resounding 9 - 1 win over Greg Cooper, Nick Wright and John Barns - Cooper the only winner for the home side beating Jon Dyson in four - Gordon Gatheral and Mick Morris were undefeated for the visitors. Three of the ties went to a fifth end but all were taken by the visitors.

Week Commencing Monday 2nd January 2012

Billericay Sports "C" played their fixture against Buttsbury "A" that was postponed from September and collected a handsome 10 - 0 victory which saw them climb back to the top of the table and overtake Selex "B" by 2 points.  The home side of Chris Buer, Steve Buer and Pat White were too strong for Caroline Cole, Paul Sturton and Roger Nutbrown with only one tie going to a final fifth end - White taking the first two ends against Nutbrown but then the deciding fifth end 11/5, 11/6, 13/15, 6/11, 11/5  - three of the other ties went to a fourth end but the Sports trio were able to gain the advantage in every contest by taking the first end.

Week Commencing Monday 19th December

A top class treble from Greg Cooper could not prevent his team Brentwood Hard from losing their home match with Billericay "C" 3 - 7 with both Nick Wright and Phil Crudgington unable to score - for the visitors Stan Dyson, Brian Farmer and Adrian Atkinson gained two wins each  with the doubles point going to Billericay.  The closest games came nearest the end of the match with Crudgington losing to Atkinson 10/12 in the fifth end and Wright likewise against Farmer 2/11.

An 8 - 2 home win for Billericay "D" over Writtle "B" saw them gain a place up the table with unbeaten performances from Gareth Davies and Jon Fieldsend and a win for Keith Cullen over Anne Lockhart for his one point contribution to the score -  Davies and Fieldsend also adding the doubles point to their tally with a win over the visitors - Francis Whitbread and Martin Goddard both defeating Cullen.

Week Commencing 12th December

Selex "B" regained their top spot by defeating a weakened Buttsbury "A" team 9 - 1 with Paul Sturton winning the first singles in five against Garry Hartgrove with the next nine ties going to the home side with Colin Clements and Kevin Smart unbeaten against Lewis Brown and Tony Nettleingham - both playing up from Division Two.  The nine points picked up by Selex give them an eight point lead over Billericay Sports "C" who have a game in hand - also against Buttsbury.

Billericay "D" claimed a 7 - 3 home win over a full strength Buttsbury "A" team with Jon Fieldsend unbeaten, Gareth Davies with two wins and Anton Ranjit-Singh with one win - Caroline Cole being the pick of the visitors with two wins, Graham Sturton defeating Ranjit--Singh for one point and Rod MacLennan unusually pointless (although forced to concede his last tie through injury).  Only the first two ties went to five ends with each side taking one - with the following five all taken in four ends.

Week Commencing 5th December

Billericay Sports "C" took over at the top of the table with a 9 - 1 home win over a Mountnessing "A" team that had previously been unbeaten - the visitors could only look to the single point gained by Gordon Gatheral over Chris Crooks as their reward for their efforts as both Steve Buer and Ken James were undefeated, both having to work extremely hard to win their ties - James lost the first two ends against Dave Finlayson but rallied to take the final three with a 11/9 final end while Buer had to remain focused against Gatheral to take the fifth end 12/10 - Jon Dyson battled away but failed to add any points to the score.

Brentwood "B" collected their sixth win of the season by defeating Billericay Sports "D" 7 - 3 - Brian Steward was the star performer and unbeaten against Mick Joslin (1 win), Brian Cole (1 win) and John Darling - Bob Garson losing to Cole but winning his other two and Mary Nicholls losing to Joslin and also winning her other two.  A good win on the night as the visitors must have thought their luck was in when they won the first two singles but then lost the following seven before winning the doubles.

Week Commencing 28th November

Chris Aukett led the way for Selex "B" in their 5 - 5 draw with visitors Mountnessing "A" although the final word came from Gordon Gatheral and Dave Finlayson in the doubles when they needed to win the tie to hold onto their unbeaten record - they succeeded at the last possible moment by taking the doubles 12/10 in the fifth end.  For Selex - Colin Clements (1 win) defeated Finlayson (1 win) for his one point and Paul Brown (1 win) scored an excellent win over Steve Nicholls (1 win) which gave Selex their five points - Gatheral was the visitors best player with two wins to his name.

Billericay Sports "C" entertained Writtle "B" and recorded a 10 - 0 home win over the luckless visitors - Kevin Barber, Anne Lockhart and Martin Goddard - for the home side Pat White, Chris Crooks and Lin Attridge were generally on top throughout although Attridge needed to be at her best to defeat Lockhart with the home player only just scraping through 11/8 in the fifth end.

Week commencing 21st November.

Keith Cullen led his side Billericay "D" to an 8 - 2 home win over Brentwood Hard - Cullen had his work cut out against Greg Cooper who took him to five ends before losing 9/11 in the fifth end.  Jon Fieldsend won twice his loss coming at the hands of Cooper in five with Gareth Davies also claiming two wins but losing to Nick Wright also in five ends.

Billericay Sports "D" just edged out Buttsbury "A" who had Paul Sturton unbeaten and winning his three games fairly comfortably - the other two home players Tony Nettleingham and Frances Hutt were unable to put any points on the board against Mick Joslin, Malcolm Henstock and John Darling in a 6 - 4 away win for Sports "D"

Brentwood "B" entertained Billericay "C" and picked up a useful 7 - 3 win but had two of their points gifted  to them with an injury to Stan Dyson who could only complete one tie before his evening was curtailed.  Brian Farmer and Chudi Ukpaka both defeated Mary Nicholls as did Dyson but both Bob Garson and Brian Steward were undefeated on the table and Brentwood recorded a 7 - 3 home win. -

Week commencing 7th November.

Billericay Sports "D" found the going tough against leaders Selex "B" and were on the wrong end of a 9 - 1 defeat at the hands of Trevor Ward, Paul Brown and Garry Hartgrove - Malcolm Henstock was the only winner on the night for the home side defeating Hartgrove 11/9 in the fifth end - Brian Cole took a 2 - 1 lead over Brown but failed to convert his lead to remain pointless and third man John Darling was also scoreless.

Billericay "D" travelled to Buttsbury "A" with Stan Dyson, Adrian Atkinson and Chudi Ukpaka up against Tony Nettleingham, Caroline Cole and Paul Sturton - the visitors picking up a 6 - 4 away win with Atkinson unbeaten, Dyson winning twice (defeated by Paul Sturton) and Ukpaka collecting one win over Nettleingham.   Sturton claiming two points with Cole one for the home side.

Gareth Davies, Jon Fieldsend and Alan Wood of Billericay "D" were up against a determined Billericay Sports "C" team of Lin Attridge, Chris Crooks and Pat White with the visitors picking up a 7 - 3 away win - Attridge being particularly impressive - losing only one end all of the match and unbeaten, White lost his chance of a maximum by losing to Fieldsend with Wood and Davies defeating Crooks for one win each.

Week commencing 31st October.

A deluge of late result cards indicate a reluctance of Captains to ensure that they are posted a day or so after the match has been completed - the match  Writtle "B" at home to Brentwood "B" was played on the 18th October and similarly Billericay "D" also at home but on the 24th October - Billericay Sports "D" were at home to Billericay "D" on Thursday 20th October but these cards should have been received by the Divisional Secretary at least by Thursday 27th but were not available either to be included in the league tables or results until Friday November 4th - somewhat distorting the league tables and associated information on both web sites.  Clubs are asked to advise team captains to post result cards as early as possible after the end of the match.

Anne Lockhart, Kevin Barber and Martin Goddard lost 1 - 9 at home to Brentwood "B" with Bob Garson and Colin Griffiths unbeaten and Mary Nicholls winning twice - her maximum being denied by Goddard in five ends.  Writtle "B" were then 2 - 8 losers at Billericay Sports "D" with John Darling and Mike Joslin unbeaten for the home side and Brian Wellman winning once - for Writtle Francis Whitbread and Andy Fox defeated Wellman with Anne Lockhart unable to score.  The third Writtle match was a home fixture against Brentwood Hard with the visitors of Greg Cooper and Philip Crudgington unbeaten and Nick Wright picking up two wins - being denied his maximum by Anne Lockhart in four - Writtle's other two0 players being Kevin Barber and Wendy Hibbitt.

Brentwood Hard also featured in an away match at Buttsbury "A" and despite putting in a good performance found themselves on the losing end of a 6 - 4 defeat - for the home side Paul Sturton was undefeated and Caroline Cole and Rod MacLennan winning a point each but neither being able to defeat both Greg Cooper and Nick Wright who each collected two points - John Barns being unable to score.  Buttsbury sealed the win with victory in the doubles.

Brentwood "B" played their second away match of three at Billericay "D" and collected a 6 - 4 win over Jonathan Fieldsend, Gareth Davies (2 wins) and Alan Wood (1 win) with Brian Steward (3 wins), Bob Garson (2 wins) losing to Davies and Colin Griffiths (1 win) - the home side took the doubles for their fourth point.        For their third away match in a row Brentwood "B" travelled to Mountnessing "A" and came away with a satisfactory 5 - 5 draw  against Gordon Gatheral, Mick Morris and Dave Finlayson.  No player remained unbeaten - Gatheral (1 win) losing to Brian Steward (2 wins) and Bob Garson (2 wins) - Morris being denied his maximum by Bruce Hay (1 win) with Finlayson defeating Hay.  Brentwood started off in great form by winning the first four ties quickly followed by Mountnessing levelling at 4 - 4 - Brentwood then ahead again at 5 - 4 only to lose the doubles for a satisfactory draw.

Billericay Sports "D" took the spoils with a 6 - 4 home win over Billericay "D" but none of the home players could get the better of Jonathan Fieldsend who was unbeaten and shared a doubles win with Alan Wood for the fourth point - both Wood and Anthon Ranjit-Singh unable to score against Mick Joslin, Malcolm Henstock and Brian Cole who all collected two wins.

Billericay Sports "C" collected 14 points for their two matches - away to Selex "B" - Chris Crooks and Lin Attridge both won twice defeating Colin Clements and Paul Brown with Pat White unable to score - Garry Hartgrove was the key to the win for Selex as he remained unbeaten and then paired up with Brown for a win in the doubles over Crooks and Attridge.           A much changed Sports "C" team of Steve Buer, Chris Buer and Ken James took on Billericay "C" at Ramsden Heath and enjoyed a 10 - 0 win over Stan Dyson, Adrian Atkinson and Chudi Ukpaka.

Week commencing 24th October.

Mountnessing "A" collected a 7 - 3 home win over Billericay "C" with both Gordon Gatheral and Jon Dyson unbeaten - their third player Dave Finlayson being beaten by all three of the visitors Stan Dyson, Brian Farmer and Adrian Atkinson despite taking them to deuce in his clashes with them.  Four of the remaining ties went to a fifth end with the home side winning all four so the visitors might claim to be a shade unfortunate.

Billericay Sports "D" entertained bottom club Writtle "B" and John Darling and Mick Joslin enjoyed the match by being unbeaten - their third player Brian Wellman picked up one win over Anne Lockhart but found Martin Goddard and Francis Whitbread just a shade too sharp - although Wellman did hold a 10 - 5 lead over Whitbread in the fifth end of their encounter but somehow contrived to fall at the final hurdle.

Week commencing 17th October.

Brentwood Hard found their visitors Billericay Sports "C" in top form and were soundly beaten 10 - 0 by a rampant Pat White, Lin Attridge and Dave Kirston with only Greg Cooper getting close to victory  - losing to Kirston in five 11/6, 7/11, 10/12, 11/7, 9/11 and also to White in five 11/8, 11/6, 10/12, 9/11, 8/11 - the home side's remaining players Nick Wright and John Barns found their opponents in top form.

Billericay "C" were no match for Selex "B" who claimed a 9 - 1 away win thanks to Chris Aukett and Colin Clements both unbeaten and Paul Brown winning twice - Chudi Ukpaka denying him his maximum in four ends - Adrian Atkinson and Brian Farmer tried to rally for points but were unable to prevent their opponents from taking the lions share.

Billericay Sports "D" entertained Billericay "D" and ran out winners 6 - 4 with two wins each for Brian Cole, Malcolm Henstock and Mick Joslin - the visitors star of the match was Jon Fieldsend who was unbeaten - Alan Wood and Anton Ranjit-Singh failing to score.

Week commencing 10th October.

The newly promoted teams to this Division suffered badly at the hands of the established clubs with Brentwood Hard losing 10 - 0 at home to Selex "B".  The visitors were taken to five ends in the first two singles but thereafter ties were generally finished quite comfortably. Greg Cooper and Phil Crudgington were the two players who took two ends each in the first two singles against Gary Hartgrove and Colin Clements but failed in five while Nick Wright was also pointless with Chris Aukett making it an unbeaten night for all three visitors.

The other newly promoted team Writtle "B" fared no better in their home match with Buttsbury "A" - also losing 10 - 0 with Anne Lockhart, Kevin Barber and Martin Goddard unable to halt the progress of Paul Sturton. Rod MacLennan and Caroline.  As in the previous match only two singles were taken to five ends although four other ties went to four ends - so a slightly better match for the home team but without reward.

Week commencing 3rd October.

A doubles win for Jonathan Fieldsend and Alan Wood over Paul Brown and Chris Aukett was all that the visitors Billericay "D" could salvage from their trip to Selex "B" which ended in a win for the home side 9 - 1 with all three of the home side Kevin Smart, Brown and Aukett unbeaten against Ron Biggs, Wood and Fieldsend.

Billericay "D" suffered badly in their following fixture when they travelled to Mountnessing "A" and lost all ties for a 10 - 0 defeat.  George Pavitt, Steve Nicholls and Gordon Gatheral swept all before them against Keith Cullen, Alan Wood and Jonathan Fieldsend with last named losing in five to both Pavitt and Gatheral - Cullen and Wood pushed their opponents to four ends but were always second best.

The new team in the League Billericay "C" had Stan Dyson to thank for three of their five points as they forced a draw with visitors Billericay Sports "D", Brian Farmer claimed one point with a win over John Darling with Anton Ranjit-Singh unable to score - for the visitors Malcolm Henstock and Brian Cole both collected two wins and Darling one - he then teamed up with Cole in the doubles, took the first two ends against Farmer and Dyson but failed to hold on and went down in five. The Sports side held a 4 - 2 lead at one stage but could only muster one win from the final four ties.

Week commencing 26th September.

With new players in their ranks this season Billericay Sports "C" look set to give the other teams in the Division a run for their money - they picked up a 10 - 0 away win against a Billericay Sports "D" team who fielded Mick Joslin, John Darling and Brian Cole against Pat White, Chris Crooks and Steve Buer who were all competing for maximums.       A curious factor in this match saw eight of the ties go to four or five ends with all eleven ends going to the Sports "C" players -  the "D" team taking the lead in each of the final three singles but then being pegged back to lose in five ends in each.

Mountnessing "A" picked up their second victory with an 8 - 2 home win over newly promoted Brentwood Hard - both Mick Morris and Jon Dyson collected maximums with Dave Finlayson adding another point with a win over Greg Cooper who failed to trouble the scoreboard in the match.  Both Nick Wright and John Barns claimed a point each by defeating Finlayson.

Three new players in the League for Billericay "C" were far too strong for newly promoted Writtle "B" and pulled off a 10 - 0 win to get their season under way.  Adrian Atkinson, Brian Farmer and Chudi Ukpaka were rarely troubled although two ties did need five ends before a result was achieved.  Anne Lockhart, Martin Goddard and Wendy Hibbitt were the unfortunate visitors.

Buttsbury "A" lost their opening match 3 - 7  at home to Brentwood "B" with Rod MacLennan the only home player to pick up any singles points - Tony Nettleingham and Caroline Cole being pointless against an unbeaten Bob Garson and Brian Steward and Dave Parker claiming two wins each - the doubles win producing a third point for the home side

Week commencing 19th September.

Brentwood "B" began their season against relegated Selex "B"  and had to wait for the ninth singles to get on the scoresheet.  Both Paul Brown and Colin Clements were unbeaten with Gary Hartgrove losing to Garson for a resounding 9 - 1 away win - Hartgrove and Clements needed to recover from  deficits in their encounters with Brian Steward with Brentwood's third player Mary Nicholls out of luck on the night.

With George Pavitt making a welcome return to table tennis after a lengthy layoff it was no surprise to see his team of Mountnessing "A" pick up a 9 - 1 away win at Writtle "B" with Anne Lockhart picking up Writtle's point with a commendable win over Dave Finlayson - Gordon Gatheral supported with a maximum for the visitors while Andy Fox and Wendy Hibbitt were unable to record any wins against a side who must be considered front runner5s before the season starts in earnest.  Two more away wins came with new team Billericay "C" claiming an 6 - 4 win over club colleagues Billericay "D" - Brian Farmer collected a maximum with Stan Dyson winning twice and Adrian Atkinson failing to trouble the scorers - For the home side Jon Fieldsend won twice and both Gareth Davies and Alan Wood picking up a win each.     Billericay Sports "D" collected a 6 - 4 away win at Brentwood Hard but none of the visitors could master Greg Cooper who was unbeaten for the home team (all in three ends) who could only field two players - Nick Wright being the second.   Brian Wellman, Brian Cole and John Darling were the Sports scorers and perhaps could have gained another point had they managed to hold on to a two end lead in the doubles. But a sound start for the three away teams reported op.
