Matches to be played week commencing 8th March 2010

Hutton "B" versus Hutton "D"

Writtle "B" versus Brentwood Hard

SECOND ROUND

Matches to be played week commencing 14th December 2009

Brentwood Hard versus Buttsbury "C"

Brentwood "C"   2  -  5   Writtle "B"

John Benson led from the front in the Brentwood "C" search for progress to the next round - he won both of his singles - against Martin Goddard in four and Kevin Barber in five but unfortunately for Benson those two wins were the only successes in their match with Writtle "B" - Mike Hooks and Richard Denton were unable to gain any victories with Writtle's third player Anne Lockhart winning her only singles played but also playing her part in the first two doubles wins which went to the visitors.

Brentwood "D"   3  -  5   Hutton "B"

Jon White, Frank Porter and Declan Pay  put up a good fight against their Hutton "B" opponents of Tony Barber, Norman Feakins and Ron Grief before going down 5 - 3 despite holding their visitors to a 3 - 3 draw after the first six games.  The first doubles went to the visitors in five but Jon White over Tony Barber in five followed by Declan Pay over Norman Feakins gave the home side the lead -  which did not last too long as Ron Grief defeated Frank Porter and then Hutton took the middle doubles to put Hutton ahead.  Jon White then won his second game of the match against Norman Feakins but wins for Tony Barber and Ron Grief saw the visitors move into the next round.

Hutton "C"   4  -  5    Hutton "D"

An enthralling local derby with the result in doubt until the final doubles - the Hutton "C" team of Richard Hayhoe, Mike Newman and Ron Milbourn came out on top in the singles contests - winning four of them with Richard Hayhoe unbeaten and Newman and Milbourn both defeating Joe Bee but it was in the doubles games that the "D" team came out on top by winning all three against Voltare Salvador, Steve Murdoch and Joe Bee  - the middle doubles proved to be the match winner for the "D" team as they lost the first two ends but fought back to take the tie in five ends 7/11, 7/11, 11/4, 12/10, 11/6 - so the three doubles victories coupled with their two singles wins was enough for the "D" team to win 5 - 4.

FIRST ROUND

Mountnessing "C"   2  -  5   Hutton "B"

Despite taking the first doubles Mountnessing "B" found their visitors Hutton "B" in good singles form with Roy Barnes defeating John Newman in four and Mike Pratley getting the better of Paul Singleton - Len Jupe then gave the home side some hope in the first half by bringing the scores to 2 - 2 in defeating Ron Grief - but the visitors then claimed the middle doubles followed by wins for Pratley over Newman and Barnes over Jupe to bring the match to a conclusion.

All other teams have byes.

2008-2009 Final

An extremely close encounter between the top two teams in the Division Brentwood Hard "A" and Billericay "D" ended with the Divisional Champions Billericay coming out on top in this Knock Out Cup Final.  Tim Mercer & Mike Harris got the perfect start for the tennis club against Graeme Dale & Alan Wood with a five end doubles win despite losing the first two ends - Martin Winter then claimed a win over the visitors captain Keith Cullen - he likewise having to play catch up as he went 2 - 1 down.  Dale got the visitors on the score sheet with a win over Harris 11/1, 12/10, 12/10 followed by a win for visitor Wood over Mercer - the home player losing a two end lead in the process 11/5, 11/7, 11/13, 10/12, 5/11.     Billericay then forged ahead for the first time by taking the middle doubles but Brentwood Hard hit back immediately to level the scores by defeating Dale in three ends.  The match of the tie then probably decided the outcome of the tie with Mercer losing the first two ends to Cullen then picking up the next two only to lose the tie 9/11 in the final end.  The match was over with a win for Wood over Harris to take the score to 5 - 3 to Billericay "D"

Semi Final Week Commencing 9th March 2009

Hutton "B" v Billericay "D"

Brentwood Hard "B" 2  -  5   Brentwood Hard "A"

A local "derby" at the tennis club saw the "A" team of Martin Winter, Tim Mercer and Mikle Harris win the first four games to surge into an almost unassailable lead - they then conceded the next two before a nail biting finish in the seventh game finally saw the "A" team through to the final with a 5 - 2 scoreline. The first doubles, plus singles wins for Winter over Greg Cooper, Mercer over Nick Wright and Harris over John Barns looked good enough but a fighting comeback in the middle doubles  which the "B" team won in five followed by another five end battle also taken by the "B" team - score now 4 - 2 to the "A" team and with Barns taking a 2 - 1 lead in ends against Winter the result looked in the balance but Winter raised his game and took the last two ends to put his team into the Final.

Second Round Week Commencing 8th December 2008

Billericay “D” 5  -  1  Writtle “B”

Brentwood Hard “A” 5 - 0  Brentwood “D”

Buttsbury “E” 3  -  5   Hutton “B”

Mountnessing “C” 0 - 5 Brentwood Hard “B”

Promotion chasing Billericay "D" look set to make it a double winning season as they comfortably overcame their opponents in the Knock Out Cup 5 - 1. Against visitors Writtle "B" - Jonathan Fieldsend and Bill Wall led the charge and were unbeaten with Melanie Jones unsuccessful in her singles battle against Wendy Hibbitt - Jones just being pipped on the post 5/11, 11/6, 7/11, 11/8, 9/11.    Martin Goddard and Kevin Barber were Writtle's remaining two players and found the home side in good form for their 5 - 1 victory.             Hutton "B" travelled to Buttsbury "E" and came away with a 5 - 3 win thanks mainly to wins in the first two doubles - the match was very even at 3 - 3 but Roy Barnes (Hutton) defeated Alan Tofts followed by a win for Ron Grief (Hutton) over Alan Bacon to ensure the final doubles was not necessary.  Laurie Tunbridge had held Buttsbury together with two fine wins in five over Barnes and in three over Hutton's third player Norman Feakins who had earlier claimed a vital win in three over Bacon.

Brentwood Hard “A” were drawn at home to Brentwood “D” in their Knock Out Cup Match and strolled home 5 – 0 in a match which saw Martin Winter, Tim Mercer and Mike Harris take on Jon White, Mike Hooks and Frank Porter – all of the games were taken in three ends and the home side might fancy their chances against their “B” team (if the draw allows) who, on the following evening picked up a similar result 5 – 0 away at Mountnessing “C” – the strong visitor’s team of Greg Cooper, John Barns and Nick Wright showed very little mercy to Joan Donovan, Len Jupe and Paul Singleton with only the middle doubles going to a fifth end.

First Round Week Commencing 13th October 2008

Brentwood Hard "B"   5  -  0   Hutton "C"

Brentwood "D"  5  -  4  Brentwood "C"

Buttsbury "F" 2  -  5  Writtle "B"

Hutton "D" 2  -  5   Billericay "D"

Nick Wright, Greg Cooper and Jon Barns of Brentwood Hard “B” had an easy match into the next round with a 5 – 0 win over a Hutton “C” team of Richard Hayhoe, Mike Newman and Joan Cook with the first doubles of Wright/Barns against Newman/Cook being the only game to get to a fourth end – the remaining four all finishing in three – so a straightforward win into the next round for the home side.           A fitting climax to the match between Brentwood “D” of Mike Hooks, Jon White and Graham Mann against Brentwood “C” of John Benson, Graham Harris and Chris Hills with the “D” team just edging the match 5 – 4 thanks to a final doubles win in four for Hooks/White over Benson/Harris – Graham Harris two singles were the key to the result and in his first he lost to Mann in 9/11 in the fifth end and in his second singles losing to White also in five 12/14, 11/6, 8/11, 11/7, 12/14 – Benson was undefeated for the losers while the players on the winning side all collected one win.     Hot favourites for the League title Billericay “D” travelled to Hutton “D” and carved out a 5 – 2 win thanks to taking all three doubles plus singles wins for Keith Cullen and Bill Wall – Alan Wood losing to Hutton’s top player Voltare Salvadore who was unbeaten in two played.  Steve Murdock and Tony Adams were unable to score for Hutton who were 2 – 5 losers.                 Buttsbury “F” entertained Writtle “B” and found the visitors in top form – Martin Goddard, Kevin Barber and Anne Lockhart proving too good for Peter James, George Gaze and Frances Hutt and winning 5 – 2 – Goddard being unbeaten and supported by Barber with one win and Writtle taking the first two doubles ensures their passage to the next round. – Gaze and Hutt picking up the two wins for the losers.

Details for season 2007-2008 listed below

Final played on Monday 21st April 2008

Hutton "C" Selo found the Divisons Runners Up a shade too strong in their Cup Final and were on the wrong end of a 5 - 1 scoreline.  Richard Hayhoe, Wally Sale and Mike Newman faced Martin Winter, Greg Cooper and Tim Mercer with the only success for Hutton coming in the tie between Hayhoe and Winter - Hayhoe just edging out Winter in the fifth end at deuce - 12/14, 12/10, 7/11, 11/8, 12/10.  This win pulled Hutton level as Brentwood Hard had won the first doubles in four ends. The match then fell away from Hutton after Hayhoe's victory as Newman and Sale lost their singles to Cooper and Mercer and with the doubles going to a Winter/Mercer combination over Hayhoe/Newman the tennis club were in control and needed one win from the next four games which came with a win for Cooper over Hayhoe in four ends.  The end of a successful season for the tennis club as they took the League Runners up spot despite finishing level on points with the top team - the title being awarded on matches won.

Semi-final  week commencing 10th March 2008

Brentwood Hard "A" 5  -  3  Hutton "B"

With Brentwood Hard "A" losing the first doubles it seemed certain that the match would be a close affair and when the home side led 3 - 1 the writing was on the wall for Hutton but they fought back to take the second doubles and following another win for Brentwood Hard - Roy Barnes pulled the visitors back into contention at 3 - 4 with a five end win over Greg Cooper - Tim Mercer then put paid to Hutton's resistance by defeating Ron Grief thus ensuring that a League and Cup double await the tennis club.   Martin Winter picked up two wins as did Tim Mercer with Cooper claiming one victory while Barnes notched the only singles victory for Hutton with Mike Pratley and Grief unable to score.

Hutton "C" Selo  9  -  1  Buttsbury "E"

Richard Hayhoe, Wally Sale and Mike Newman ensured that one Hutton team will be in the final with a 5 - 1 home win over the young players of Buttsbury "E".   As in the other semi final the first doubles went to the visitors but from then on it was Hutton "C" Selo all the way, taking the next four singles and the middle doubles for an impressive victory.  The first doubles went to five ends and the remaining ties all went to four ends - Graham Sturton, Sam Gilbert and Davey Crook of Buttsbury were extremely competitive but were unable to match their opponents.

Second Round  week commencing 10th December 2007

Brentwood Hard "B" 2  -  5   Hutton "C" Selo

Brentwood "C" 3  -  5   Buttsbury "E"

Buttsbury "F" 1  -  5   Brentwood Hard "A"

Hutton "B"  W/O 5  -  0   Brentwood "D"

The two leading teams in the Division Buttsbury "F" and Brentwood Hard "A" met in this second round knock out cup match and current leaders Brentwood Hard powered home to a 5 - 1 victory away at Buttsbury TTC.  The first doubles set the visitors on the way followed by wins for Martin Winter over Duncan Ramsey in five ends, Greg Cooper over Alan Tofts to give the visitors a healthy 3 - 0 lead cut to two with the home side's David Ramsey claiming a fine five end win over Tim Mercer.  The success was shortlived however as the visitors took the middle doubles and Cooper defeated Duncan Ramsey in four to take his team through to the next round and a possible League and Cup doubles.          John Benson of Brentwood "C" kept alive his team's hopes in their home match with Buttsbury "E" but despite winning his two singles  and a share in the middle doubles he could not prevent the young visitors making progress 5 - 3 to the next round  - Graham Sturton, Paul Sturton and Sam Gilbert gained the necessary victories over the remaining Brentwood players Chris Hills and David Kennard to ensure victory.

Brentwood Hard "B" were drawn at home to Hutton "C" Selo and were beaten by the visitors 5 - 2 - after four games the Brentwood side were level at 2 - 2 but forced to concede the middle doubles due to the retirement from the match of Len Nicholas they were then unable to recover and lost the following two singles. Initially Hutton had taken the first doubles with Wally Sale and Mike Newman defeating John Barns and Len Nicholas followed by Richard Hayhoe defeating the home side's Paul Draper.  But Nicholas defeated Sale in four ends and J Barns had defeated Newman in three defeats for Draper by Sale and Barns by Hayhoe was enough to send Hutton "C" Selo into the next round.

Hutton "C" Selo   5  -  0   Buttsbury "D"

Writtle "B" 4  -  5   Hutton "B"

Writtle "B" were narrowly beaten at home in their match with Hutton "B" and will look upon the middle doubles as the crucial encounter which ultimately cost them the match  - the first doubles saw Writtle on their way winning in three but Roy Barnes gained a three nil win over Martin Goddard to level the score.  Francis Whitbread and Andy Fox then gained wins over Mike Pratley and Ron Grief to surge into a 3 - 1 lead for Writtle.  The middle doubles was taken to a fifth end with Hutton just coming out on top 12/10 to pull the score back - Hutton then collected two more singles victories with wins for Pratley over Goddard and Barnes over Whitbread. The score at 4 - 3 to the visitors but Fox then got the better of Grief to set up a grandstand finish in the final doubles which Hutton took in four ends to end up winners 5 - 4 in an excellent encounter.                          An easy win for Hutton "C" Selo over Buttsbury "D" with Richard Hayhoe, Wally Sale and Mike Newman taking all before them against John Newman, Alan Bacon and Bill Nutbrown - only one game of the first five went the distance - the battle between the two number ones Hayhoe and John Newman with scores of 4/11, 11/8, 11/5, 8/11, 11/6 - two of the other early singles saw ends won by the visitors but their resistance soon ended and the home side look potential winners taking the match 9 - 0 with all games played.                   Buttsbury "F" at home to Hutton "D" made progress with a 5 - 1 win over Alan Lovell, Tony Adams and Steve Murdock.  The home side lost only one of the first six games with Murdock defeating David Ramsey, but Duncan Ramsey and Alan Tofts safely took their team through to the next round with a comfortable victory.
